Lighting constitutes a major direct cost for buildings. The heat produced by standard bulbs requires cooling appliances to run at greater power, in turn consuming more electricity.

Their limited lifespan also mean man-hours and money spent on replacement. While toxic components in certain types of bulbs go on to pollute the environment.
